As one of the leading Asian countries, Korea has developed an art culture similar to its neighboring country, Japan. This exhibition in fact attempts to promote a mutual understanding on the cultural and physical aspects of the two countries, Korea and Japan, by introducing works of contemporary Japanese young artists. The title Fancy Dance derives from Okano Reiko’s Japanese comic book, which depicts the relationships among tradition, custom, and modern day society of Japan. Like the comic Fancy Dance, this exhibition questions harmony among individuals, relationships between society and the individual, and the way and manner in which one frees oneself from an entity without escaping to Asian collectivism. These main themes are illustrated through the works of 10 Japanese artists and artist groups of the 90s, such as, Dumb Type, Mariko Mori, Yutaka Sone, Miwa Yanagi, etc. http://artsonje.org/en/99_09_fancy_dance/
